After Gosnell: A Turning Point

This spring the nation sat repulsed as the murder trial of Kermit Gosnell, noted Philadelphia abortionist, unfolded.  The details were straight from a horror film, but sadly, the horror of abortion is all too real.

After nearly 11 days of deliberation, a guilty verdict was handed down.  The Gosnell case had pulled the curtain back on the ‘safe, legal and rare’ line that pro-aborts tout daily.

Some estimates claim as many as 5,000 born-alive babies are killed yearly nationwide.  However, based on the Gosnell case alone, the actual number may be much higher.

The trial was a heartbreaking reminder of just how far our country has fallen from the Godly principles on which we were founded.  How do we as Christians respond in the wake of this appalling trial?

Proverbs 31:8-9 tells us to ‘Speak up for those who can't speak for themselves.’  As life advocates, we must continue the dialogue in an effort to point people to the horrific truth of abortion.

1.   We must first educate ourselves.

Christians need to know the facts surrounding abortion.  The GRTL website is a great place to get started.

There is no legitimate "pro-choice" position biblically.   The Bible is crystal clear on the innate value and dignity of human life.

We are all called by God to protect and defend the innocent.  As Christians, we must elect leaders who share these views.

A Christian view of the law has two basic premises; some things are morally wrong whether or not they are legal.  Thomas Jefferson called this ‘natural law’.

2.   We must speak the truth in love.

We need to be clear that abortion is evil without condemning those who have had an abortion experience.  There is no sin so great that the Gospel cannot overcome it.  Jesus’ death on the cross paid the penalty for all of our sin.

Jim Daly of Focus on the Family said, "It should be the prayer of all people that what happened…at the Gosnell trial will ultimately serve as a turning point in the ongoing effort to promote the beauty and protection of all life”.

A turning point, indeed.  In the wake of the heinous Gosnell trial, Georgia Right to Life continues with its mission to restore respect and effective legal protection for all innocent human life.  Won’t you join with us?
