Planned Parenthood... It's Not What You Think!

A few "Choice" Quotes

"The right to choose abortion makes all my other rights possible."
- Planned Parenthood advertisement, November, 1985

"Choice about...abortion must be more than legal rights...Choice must be recognized as a fundamental moral value."
- PPFA Plan of Action, 1997

"Babies are loud, smelly and expensive. Unless you want one."
- Advertisement, October 16, 1996. Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota

"Roe v. Wade was a defining moment in our nation's history...We will celebrate the wisdom and justice of this landmark decision and set a meaningful course for the future."
- PPFA President Gloria Feldt.
Press release on 25th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, January 1998

"We have yet to beat our drums for birth control in the way we beat them for polio vaccine. We are still unable to put babies in the class of dangerous epidemics, even though this is the exact truth."
- Mary Calderone, M.D.
Former president of Planned Parenthood

Many people automatically associate Planned Parenthood with abortion.
It’s appropriate; it’s by far their biggest business. However, there's a lot more to Planned Parenthood than just abortions. Read on.

The "Wal-Mart of Abortion"
Consider a few brief facts: Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading abortion performer and promoter. In 2001, Planned Parenthood’s clinics performed 16% of the nation’s abortions, killing 213,026 babies.1 If September 11 happened 71 times, you get that many deaths… almost. If you look at the chart, you can see that Planned Parenthood’s plans typically don’t involve parenthood.

Does Planned Parenthood prevent abortions, or does it increase them? Let's look at the data. In Minnesota, Planned Parenthood opened a clinic in St. Cloud in 2001. From 2001-2004, abortions in the four-county area around the clinic rose 10%, while abortions statewide went down 7%.2

In fact, Planned Parenthood nationwide has become increasingly committed to abortion. Planned Parenthood is now responsible for one out of every five abortions in America.3

Planned Parenthood tries to say that it prevents abortion through contraception. But only 8% of abortions are performed on women who have never used contraception. 54% of women having abortions used contraception that month.4 As a result, as its own representatives admitted in Morgantown, WV in 2005, there is no data to show that a Planned Parenthood clinic in an area reduces teen pregnancy.5

Free Abortions to 9/11 and Katrina Victims
After Hurricane Katrina shattered the lives of millions of people in the South, abortion advocates offered them morning after pills and free abortions instead of food, shelter or money to rebuild.

It wasn't long before Atlanta was doing the same. Atlanta Women’s Medical Center began offering free abortion and gynecological care to Katrina evacuees on a case-by-case basis. "This just adds to the destruction these women already have in their lives," said Caryl Swift, the president of GRTL. "Many have already lost family members. They have all lost property. Taking the lives of unborn children who have survived the hurricane is the wrong response."

Opposes Parental Notification Laws
The latest poll on this shows that 78% of the American public (including 64% of the "pro-choice" community!) agrees that state law should require a female under age 18 to notify at least one parent of guardian before having an abortion.6 The majority of both sides of the abortion issue have come together and agreed that this is common sense.

Yet, take a look at Planned Parenthood's website. In their own words: "Planned Parenthood opposes any limitation or restriction [such as parental-involvement laws] of the access of adolescents to confidential reproductive health services, including contraception and abortion."7

In other words, while underage girls must get parental consent to get their ears pierced or to receive an aspirin from a school nurse, Planned Parenthood is actively fighting to allow girls as young as 12 to be taken by anyone for a secret surgical abortion without a single parent even being notified!

Ironically, Planned Parenthood held a poster contest in 2003, and guess what was written in their terms and conditions? "Children under age 18 must have a parent of legal guardian's permission to submit their designs..." Planned Parenthood is lobbying for underage girls to get secret abortions but require parental consent for those same girls to enter a simple poster contest!

Caught Promoting Violence Against Pro-Lifers
A Planned Parenthood abortion business in California quietly removed a cartoon video promoting violence against pro-life advocates that drew national outrage in August of 2005. The cartoon features a pro-abortion "superhero" who travels to different locations across the country to promote abortion and oppose abstinence education.

In one scene, the character uses a gun to envelop pro-life protesters outside a Planned Parenthood in a condom. The condom explodes, killing the pro-life advocates, and the character expresses her satisfaction. At the end of the video, a pro-life person is shown being decapitated.

Calls and emails to Steve Smith, director of media relations and communications for Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, were not returned. Pia de Solenni, director of life and women's issues at Family Research Council, says the video is hypocritical because abortion advocates frequently accuse pro-life groups of supporting abortion-related violence.

According to a 2004 report from Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, it receives 53 percent of its revenue from government fees and contracts.

Planned Parenthood Golden Gate is the abortion facility that distributed the dangerous abortion pill to teenager Holly Patterson -- ultimately killing her.

"Choice on Earth" Christmas Cards
Since 2002, Planned Parenthood has marketed it's Christmas cards and t-shirts, with the phrase "Choice on Earth." The controversial theme is a distortion of a passage in the Gospel of Luke, where an angel announces to shepherds the birth of their Savior in Bethlehem. "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to all whom God favors." (Luke 2:14; NLT) "What 'choice on Earth' really means is 'abortion on Earth,' said Jim Sedlak, the executive director of STOPP. "In the season that celebrates the birth of Jesus, it is absolutely outrageous to have cards celebrating the death of babies." If Planned Parenthood had existed 2,000 years ago, it would have targeted Mary, an unwed, pregnant teenager, for a profitable abortion.

Places a Wedge Between Parents and Children
Planned Parenthood purposefully places a wedge between parents and children. One of the ways they do this is by providing birth control to minors without parental knowledge. They also portray parents as weak and incompetent in their literature. For example, in the introduction to PPFA’s website for teenagers, parents are essentially told to back off and let the Planned Parenthood “experts” take over the sex education of their children. “We understand that many teens are uncomfortable talking to their parents about sex… Please remember that this web site is for teens. This is their place. Take a look around if you like, but we prefer that you do not register on the site.”

Promotes Promiscuity in Teens
Planned Parenthood encourages all forms of sexual activity to teens. Planned Parenthood’s pamphlets and teen website graphically promotes “activities” that are too shameful to write about. Planned Parenthood teaches that there are no wrongs regarding sexual activity as long as the participants want to do what they’re doing. A typical PPFA brochure states, “The Real Question Is: What’s Right For You? You Decide!” Planned Parenthood strongly opposes “abstinence-only” sex education programs that focus on abstinence before marriage. They do this because they know that teens are 20% of their clientele. The more sex teens have, the more abortions they will need in the future. They have even paid teens to promote Planned Parenthood among their friends, classmates and peers! For example, Planned Parenthood worked out an arrangement with the school system in Morrow County, Ohio in which teenagers were paid $100 to be trained as “outreach workers.” (This program was paid for with taxpayer funds.)

Planned Parenthood claims to give kids "medically accurate sexuality information." But can we trust it?

Claim: Planned Parenthood tells teens that "serious, long-term emotional problems after abortion are rare."8 True? False! Recent studies have confirmed that adolescents are likely to face serious psychological problems after abortion.9

Claim: Planned Parenthood tells kids that sexual activity such as "outercourse" "is nearly 100% effective against...sexually transmitted diseases."10 True? False! Human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes nearly all cervical cancers, and genital herpes are among the infections that can be spread by skin-to-skin contact with genital areas not covered by condoms-in the kind of "outercourse" that Planned Parenthood recommends!11

Claim: Planned Parenthood tells kids that condoms will keep them disease-free. True? False! Condoms provide no risk reduction at all for some dangerous infections, such as HPV and herpes. In any case, condoms have a built-in failure rate ("method-failure"). It is also unrealistic, statistically speaking, to assume condoms will be used consistently and correctly by adolescents ("user-failure"). 11% of women using condoms get pregnant every year. For HIV, risk reduction is only 80%, even if condoms are used 100% of the time.12

Also, Planned Parenthood neglects to tell our kids that 67% of teens who have had sex regret it and wish they had waited.13 Sexually active girls are around three times more likely to be depressed and to commit suicide than abstainers.14

Protects Statutory Rapists
Life Dynamics exposed a nationwide cover-up of the sexual abuse of minors by Planned Parenthood. The law in every state of our country states that clinic workers must file a report when they suspect sexual abuse, including statutory rape. The fact is, abortion clinics almost never file any reports, allowing teenagers to continue in their abusive relationships by giving them an abortion and burying their records. To prove this, Life Dynamics hired a 23-year old woman with a young-sounding voice to pose as a 13-year-old girl who thought she was pregnant by her 22-year-old boyfriend. She called nearly 1,000 “family planning” centers across the country, including most Planned Parenthood facilities. Most of these calls were taped, and in about 80% of the calls to Planned Parenthood centers, the clinic workers agreed to conceal or knowingly ignore the suspected felony statutory rape, often even acknowledging the criminal nature of the relationship. Here are just two examples of these taped conversations:

An employee at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Okolona, Kentucky, when asked if the clinic would report the 22-year old boyfriend, replied, “Well, I’ll be honest with you. By law because you are thirteen years old, we should. Now, we’ve never reported anybody. OK?”

One Planned Parenthood clinic worker suggested the caller could have the boyfriend keep “a year’s worth” of Planned Parenthood-supplied birth control pills in his possession (thereby ensuring that the sexual abuse could continue in secret.)

Planned Parenthood is currently being investigated by state and local authorities in Kansas, Indiana, and Ohio for not reporting cases of statutory rape and child sex abuse. Planned Parenthood is refusing to turn over records, citing patient privacy. But as Whitney Watson, spokesman for Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline commented, "This is not a privacy issue. Any time an [underage] girl has an abortion, that child has been raped and we need to find out what happened."15

Any time an underage girl walks into a contraceptive or abortion clinic, health-care workers should be concerned. Almost 70% of teen pregnancies are fathered by adult men.16That means that a lot of potential cases of statutory rape and child abuse should be reported by Planned Parenthood, but, as Indiana's attorney general emphasizes, they are not.

On March 30, 2004, a 21-year-old man brought a 14-year-old girl into a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Cincinnati. The clinic gave her an abortion and sent her away with a shot of the hormonal contraceptive Depo-Provera. The problem? The 21-year-old "stepbrother" was actually her soccer coach and molester. The man is now serving time in prison.

But what about the Planned Parenthood clinic? How many of these cases has the clinic reported to authorities as possible cases of child abuse? Zero. None. Not a single referral to local authorities from Planned Parenthood.17

Population Control
Planned Parenthood is a huge proponent of population control in the world. In a 1984 advertisement, Planned Parenthood stated, “We…have spent the better part of the century supporting and fighting for everyone’s freedom to make their own decisions about having children.” Apparently, this “freedom” doesn’t apply to people in China. Planned Parenthood has never criticized China’s brutal one-child per family policy that forces women to have abortions if they’re pregnant with their second. In fact, they even write, “Few women dispute that women's lives are better now than in the past…” because of China’s “family planning programs.” Ironically, many Americans don’t even know that this is still going on. In fact, China’s population control program has resulted in tens of millions of abortions, and more than one million cases of infanticide (mostly of baby girls.)18

Sadly this isn’t the only case of Planned Parenthood supporting population control worldwide. Alan Guttmacher, Planned Parenthood’s former president predicted the “possibility that eventually coercion (in population programs) may become necessary.” He told a reporter that such force may be especially needed “in areas where the pressure is the greatest, possibly in India and China.” Besides compulsory abortion, Planned Parenthood’s population control programs also include forced sterilization for those who have had two children.19

Selling of Body Parts
Planned Parenthood has been caught selling body parts to companies that then sells them for research. One such company, Opening Lines, offered body parts - “the freshest tissue available” - to researchers at the following prices: Limbs (at least 2) $150. fetal spinal cord - $325, fetal reproductive organs - $550, fetal brains - $999 (30% discount if significantly fragmented), etc.20 In fact, this is most likely why the partial birth abortion procedure was developed: to keep most of a babies’ body parts intact for sale after their death. For more information and proof of  this gruesome practice, email the Director of Education at joshbrahm@grtl.org.

Opposes Bill Protecting Women From Forced Abortions
The Michigan legislature is considering a bill that would protect women from being pressured or coerced into having an abortion. If any kind of legislation has a chance of finding common ground in the abortion debate, that's a bill that should.

However, Planned Parenthood opposes the measure because they say it treads upon their sacred abortion cow and could cause some women planning to fork over a few hundred dollars to have an abortion to reconsider their decision.

Use of Tax Dollar Money
Last but not least, Planned Parenthood uses your tax dollars to carry out their agenda. Even though Planned Parenthood has hundreds of millions of dollars in reserve and ends each year with an average $20 million in “excess revenue over expenses,” lobbyists for this non-profit organization are in Congress and the state legislatures every year fighting for more government funding. As it is, one third of their income comes from government grants like Title X, paid for by the taxpayers.

Conclusion
Planned Parenthood is much more than a “family planning service” offering “compassionate care at an affordable cost.”1 They are destroying our nation’s families. Testimony after testimony comes out of abortion clinics, with the doctors talking about being hesitant at first about taking such a horrific job as killing babies, but the paycheck was too much to give up. (Many doctors take as much as $250 to $500 from each abortion, in cash.)21

So What Can We Do?
Begin by opening up the communication lines with your teens about God’s design for sexuality. Send them to www.lovematters.com, a chastity website for teens. Let your public officials know that you do not want your tax dollars to go to Planned Parenthood. Contact your school board members and ask them to keep Planned Parenthood out of your local schools. If that is unsuccessful, you have a right to request equal time to share the abstinence/pro-life viewpoint with students. Georgia Right to Life can help by using high-impact, multi-media presentations we’ve developed for situations like that. Boycott companies which give to Planned Parenthood, by visiting www.fightpp.org. For other ways to fight Planned Parenthood, visit www.all.org/stopp.

Planned Parenthood... Exposing the Truth!
When examining the beliefs or an organization, it is important to first examine their founder. The founder of Plan Parenthood is Margaret Sanger. There is little room to doubt the purpose of this organization when she states, "Those least fit to carry on the race are increasing most rapidly... Funds that should be used to raise the standard of our civilization are diverted to maintenance of those who should have never been born" ("Pivot of Civilization", pg 279).

As you can see, their purpose is not in building a brighter America with stronger families, but to eliminate the "least fit" of society, and unfortunately they are succeeding. Abortion was the most often performed surgical procedure at Plan Parenthood clinics in 2001 (Henshaw, PSRH, Jan/Feb 2003). Their response? "Babies are loud, smelly and expensive. Unless you want one" (Advertisement, October 16, 1996- Plan Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota).

(HIGHLIGHTS FROM PLANNED PARENTHOOD'S 2002-2003 ANNUAL REPORT)

RECORD NUMBER OF ABORTIONS
While the number of abortions performed in the U.S. has dropped in recent years, the number of abortions performed at Planned Parenthood clinics in 2002 was the highest number ever recorded for the organization, according to its latest annual report. Planned Parenthood’s own research shows that from 1994-2000, total yearly U.S. abortions decreased 7.7.% while PPFA’s abortions increased 47.9%. In 2002, Planned Parenthood clinics performed 227,375 abortions. Compare this number to the amount of abortions performed in 1999: 182,854. Planned Parenthood actually performed around 17% of all U.S. abortion procedures. From 1977 to 2002, Planned Parenthood reported that it did a gross total of 3,246,934 abortions! They make approximately $90 million dollars per year in the abortion industry.

ABORTION VS. PRENATAL CARE
Planned Parenthood states in their annual report that they “believe in everyone’s right to choose when or whether to have a child, and that every child should be wanted and loved,” however the choice to keep your child is not one that Planned Parenthood “clinics” are evidently equipped to handle. According to their annual report, 80% of abortion clients receive their care at Planned Parenthood facilities, while 80% of prenatal clients have to be referred elsewhere. Planned Parenthood saw 19,281 prenatal clients in 1999, compared to 182,854 abortion clients. In other words there were more than nine abortions for every client given prenatal care.

ADOPTION NOT MUCH OF AN OPTION
In 2002, abortions at Planned Parenthood outnumbered adoption referrals by a margin of 115 to 1. They only reported making 1,963 adoption referrals to other agencies. In 1999, their abortion/adoption ratio was 60 to 1.

HUMANITARIAN AID?
Under the heading “Responding to the Crisis in Kosovo” Planned Parenthood states that they “contributed more than $100,000 to the Albanian Family Planning Association to assess needs for family planning…” They go on to point out that they established a non-governmental family planning association in order to “train reproductive health care providers and advocate expanded reproductive rights.”

FUNDED BY TAXPAYER DOLLARS
Planned Parenthood’s annual report shows money gained from governmental grants and contracts to be more than $254.4 million per year. Although Planned Parenthood is considered a non-profit organization, their 2002 fiscal year ended with a huge profit of $36.6 million dollars.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD FEDERATION OF AMERICA (PPFA) AND POLITICS
Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund spent $10 million for a television and mail campaign in order to prevent President George W. Bush’s election in 2000 (they were also involved in more than 700 races nationwide). They are presently fighting hard to keep very pro-life President George W. Bush from being re-elected through cartoons (Choice Chick), endorsing John Kerry and television commercials.

PROMOTING PROMISCUITY IN TEENS
PPFA encourages teen sexual activity through its sex education program and through their grossly distorted teen website, www.teenwire.com. Planned Parenthood depends heavily on the sale of contraceptives/abortifacients to fuel its deadly grasp on our teens. When these products fail to prevent pregnancy, they are ready and willing to “fix” that problem.
