Georgia Right to Life Cheers Dramatic Abortion Decrease

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 10, 2005 -- According to recently released statistics from the Georgia Department of Health, abortions performed in Georgia fell by a stunning 5.3 percent from 2003. Abortions in 2004 were 32,708 -- down from 34,545 in 2003. Since the peak year of 1990, abortions have dropped by a massive 17 percent.

Typically, 75 percent of the abortions in Georgia were performed in DeKalb and Fulton Counties alone. Over the past three years GRTL has focused efforts through television ads tagged with Option Line's 800-395 HELP to reach the residents in metro-Atlanta. Last year Option Line ranked the Atlanta Care Center in Fulton County as second in the nation for receiving the most calls. During this same period, abortions for residents of these two counties decreased by a huge 10 percent!

After 15 continuous years of working to pass a Woman's Right to Know bill, Georgia Right to Life succeeded this year. The 24-hour waiting period will give women valuable information they need to make an informed decision. Other states, which have enacted this legislation, have seen a 30 percent reduction in abortions. Residents from Alabama and South Carolina who travel to Georgia to avoid their 24-hour waiting period comprise 8 percent of the abortions in Georgia. It is anticipated that in 2006 more babies' lives will be saved as a result of this pro-life law in Georgia.

GRTL President Caryl Swift said, "We will continue to reach out to women in need so that they know abortion is not their only alternative. Research tells us that 60 percent of women entering an abortion facility don't really want an abortion, but believe they have no alternative. Eighty percent regret their decision. We care about saving women from the shame and guilt of abortions as well as saving babies' lives."

Georgia Right to Life is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian organization whose purpose is to engage in activities that will restore respect and effective legal protection to all human beings from the moment of fertilization until natural death.
